Notes From Coach Kelly's Media Conference
"We didn't spend a whole lot of time looking at Tennessee film (from last year)," admitted Kelly, "We spent more time looking at Louisiana Tech film -- where (head) Coach (Derek) Dooley came from -- Boise State film -- where (defensive coordinator) Justin Wilcox is from -- and Texas Tech film, where their special teams coordinator came from."
The blending of different schemes creates a relatively significant unknown according to Kelly, who was quick to mention that the Vols defeated Tennessee-Martin 50-0 in their opening game of the season and were thus able to use little of their playbook.
"You can look at (Tennessee's) tape and they didn't get very deep in to their playbook," said Kelly, "but it's the same thing with us. We won 72-0 and we didn't get very deep in to our playbook either...we anticipate them to expand (upon their play calling), but you don't know that till we line up and play."
When asked what kind of offensive tempo he expects the Volunteers to employ, Kelly was similarly unsure, saying that the Ducks will more or less be reacting on the fly when they take the field on defense.
"We only have the Tennessee-Martin game to go off of," said Kelly, "Our defense is prepared to play a lot of snaps and that's why we've really tried to work on our depth and being able to rotate nine or ten defensive linemen and six linebackers and ten defensive backs in to the game. We'll see how it unfolds."
The Ducks are scheduled to leave Friday, where Kelly says the team will practice in Eugene that morning as per usual before boarding a flight and heading east to Knoxville.
"It's a typical Friday leave," stated Kelly, "We'll practice here like we normally do and then fly to the other venue. We'll walk around the stadium a little bit when we get there and then we'll have meetings Friday night and we're kicking off at 4:00 Pacific time for us, so it's an afternoon game."
