Nelson Likes Ducks' Run Of Tight End Success

Modesto (CA) Modesto Christian TE Raymond Nelson

The string of success the University of Oregon has enjoyed at the tight end position has been a big selling point to prospective recruits the past few years. For Modesto (CA) Modesto Christian tight end Raymond Nelson, it is no different. Despite having family ties to UCLA, Nelson admits he doesn't have any favorites and that the Ducks rate rather highly for his services.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"Yes I do."

How long ago did you receive that offer?

"Between one and two weeks ago, I'd say."

Who have you been in contact the most with from Oregon?

"Coach (Tom) Osborne."

How often are you guys in contact?

"I haven't called him at all. He's just had his one phone call to me and we talked for about half an hour."

What is your overall interest in Oregon at this point?

"It's very high."

What is it that has you so interested in Oregon?

"They have really successful tight ends that come out of there, the best facilities in the nation, they won the Pac-10, they have solid coaches that have been there for a long time, they throw the ball to the tight end, their academics are good...all that stuff."

How would would you describe yourself as a player?

"I guess I'd say I have good hands, I'm decently fast -- I run a 4.7 -- and I can get open and block."

Is Oregon recruiting you as a tight end or defensive end?

"Yeah, tight end."

Is that what most schools are recruiting you as?

"Yeah, there have been a number of schools in the Pac-10 that asked me what I wanted to play and I've always wanted to play tight end."

Would you compare yourself to anyone at the collegiate or professional level?

"I'd probably say Jason Witten or Todd Heap...somebody like that.

What are you looking for in a program?

"Probably how I'm going to fit in to the offense, how early I'd be able to play, academics -- if they have what I want to major in -- and I guess how close to home (the school is)."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

"Yeah, I'm probably going to go in to business or physical therapy."

What are the offers that you have from other schools?

"I have both Arizona schools, I have Washington State, I have Oregon, I don't think I have Oregon State yet, UCLA and USC are probably going to offer soon, Cal hasn't offered, but I'm going to their camp this Sunday and Stanford hasn't really come around at all."

Is there anybody leading? Do you have a top list of schools at this point?

"Nobody's really leading so far...I'm definitely going to stay in the Pac-10, but we'll see who all offers."

In your conversations with Coach Osborne, has he discussed getting you to Eugene for a visit?

"We were planning an unofficial visit in a couple of weeks to go see Oregon and Oregon State, but it turns out that weekend that Oregon State has graduation and Oregon has something else going on, so all the hotels are already booked, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to come up there."
