EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Oregon head men’s basketball coach Dana Altman announced Thursday that Tyrone Nared has signed a National Letter of Intent. Nared, a 6-8 forward from Woonsocket, R.I., will have two years of eligibility for the Ducks beginning in the 2010-11 season.

“Tyrone is a versatile player and a good athlete,” Altman said. “He will help us once he makes the adjustment to Division I basketball.”

Nared (NAIR – ed) listed several determining factors for choosing Oregon, including a chance to play in a major conference. “I look forward to the challenge of playing in the Pac-10,” he said.

Altman and first-year assistant coach Brian Fish were aware of Nared through previous recruitment.

“Not only did I have a good relationship with Coach Fish and Coach Altman, but I also got a long with the players when I was on my visit,” Nared said.

Nared played the 2009-10 season for Monroe College (Bronx, N.Y.), helping the Mustangs advance to both Region 15 and District 3 championships. He played in 37 of the 38 available games, starting 24 of those outings, leading Monroe to a 29-8 overall record and a seventh-place finish at the 2010 NJCAA National Tournament.

“Tyrone has a nice combination of size, skill and athleticism,” said Jeff Brustad, head coach of Monroe College. “He can shoot it well - one of the top shooters on our squad.”

Nared boasted the team’s top field goal percentage (57.0 percent, 114-of-200), while averaging 8.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

Individual accolades Nared received last season included District 3 All-Tournament team and tourney MVP honors, Region 15 All-Tournament team recognition, as well as the Region 15 Sportsmanship Award.

“Tyrone is a terrific young man off the floor,” Brustad said. “He immediately fit in well with the team and our campus upon his transfer to Monroe. Off the floor you can’t get a better kid.”

Nared lists sports management, communications, or business administration as potential majors at UO. He said the Eugene-Springfield area was also a determining factor in becoming a Duck.

“I liked the atmosphere, the community is beautiful,” Nared said. “It’s very peaceful, very laid back. I can really be focused on my academics and on improving my game.”

Facilities also played a role for Nared in choosing UO.

“I had a chance to see the new arena we’re moving into – that really drew my attention,” he said.

Matthew Knight Arena is scheduled to open for the conference portion of the upcoming 2010-11 season.

Prior to Monroe, Nared spent two years at Community College of Rhode Island (Warwick, R.I.) where he was coached by Rick Harris.

Following a redshirt year in 2007-08, Nared averaged 12.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per game as a freshman during the 2008-09 season, leading the Knights to their fifth-straight Region 11 Tournament Championship. He received all-american honors for his play that freshman season at CCRI.

Nared was an all-state performer at Woonsocket High School in Woonsocket, R.I., under the direction of coach Preston Murphy.

Nared is one of two recruits to have signed NLI’s with UO during the spring signing period. He joins Jonathan Loyd, a 5-9, 165-pound point guard from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nev.
