Kelly Gives a W
Kelly was asked about Oregon State and the first thing he brought up was Canfield.
"Sean Canfield has had a tremendous senior season," said Kelly. "He's had a great year and when you put him with the Rodgers brothers, they present so many problems."
The Oregon headman also had good things to say about the Beaver defense and of course the Beaver coaching staff whom Kelly has a high regard.
Kelly was also asked about his quarterback, Jeremiah Masoli, a player that Kelly also has high regard for. Kelly believes that Masoli has a way of keeping plays alive and of course has great athletic ability. The Ducks spend a lot time in practice working on scramble drills, just because of what Masoli can do.
"He makes difficult plays look routine," observed Kelly. "That's why he's one of the top players in the country."
Those drills paid off last night in Tucson where Masoli accounted for six touchdowns, three passing and three running. Altogether Masoli threw for 284 yards and ran for another 61 yards. In the last drive of regulation and the two overtime periods Masoli was 9-for-14, 77 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran seven yards and a touchdown.
During the plane trip back to Eugene after the game Kelly and his staff watched the game and made evaluations. The team had the day off on Sunday but on Monday it will be back to business, preparing for the Beavers.
When asked what grade he gave his team on its performance in Arizona, Kelly simply replied, "a W."
According to an Oregon Athletic Department spokesperson, Katelynn Johnson, the Oregon cheerleader who was hit by a bottle thrown from the crowd following the conclusion of the Oregon-Arizona game sustained a concussion. She was taken to the University Health Center in Tucson, held for observation and then released. She returned home to Eugene today.
