Available for Spring Ball

The Ducks picked up a "diamond in the rough" according to Golden West College Football Coach Nick Mitchell in wide receiver Lavasier Tuinei. The 6-foot-5, 193 pound receiver committed to Oregon in December.

Lavasier Tuinei will enroll at Oregon for spring term and be available for the Ducks workouts during April according to Mitchell.

"We weren't really pushing him," said Mitchell of Tuinei. "Coach (John) Neal saw him and loved him."

The reason Mitchell was advertising Tuinei is because he would have liked the big, speedy receiver to hang around for his second year at Golden West. Tuinei was fully qualified for enrollment in a Division I program out of high school, but because he did not play football for his senior season and transferred from one school to another, he was completely off the recruiting radar and was gift for Golden West's program.

Mitchell explained that when the opportunity arose for Tuinei, the Golden West coaching staff were very supportive of Tuinei's decision to become a Duck. While some programs have contacted Mitchell regarding Tuinei since the commitment was made public in December, Mitchell says that he told those programs that Tuinei's decision to go to Oregon is final and he is on his way.

Tuinei has the size and speed (in the 4.5 range) and could eventually be a player that proves that while rating stars and all-star games give folks a mark the measure by, there are still a lot of very good players out there just waiting to be found.

As he was fully qualified out of high school he has four years to complete three years of eligibility.
