Dixon's Status is Final -- Done for the Year
"I would support him whether he wanted to play or not play," Bellotti said.
Dixon went down in during the first quarter of the game with Arizona in obvious pain. He had not been hit but appeared to have twisted his knee. He was taken out of the game and did not return to action.
"Dennis wanted to give it a try to see if he could do it," said Dr. Bob Crist, team physician. "He did well in practice for a week. We felt comfortable to letting him try."
Oregon had been ranked second in the BCS standings, but with the 34-24 loss last night to Arizona all hopes of making it to the championship game have been dashed.
Dixon will not return for any more games this season and is scheduled for surgery on his knee.
Additionally, Bellotti revealed that running back Jonathan Stewart suffered a minor toe and shoulder injury during the Arizona game, but the head coach termed Stewart's condition "not serious."
Dixon had been the Pac-10's most efficient passer this season with a 163.1 rating.
He was generally regarded as the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy. It is unknown presently what affect his condition might have on his chance entering the NFL draft next spring.
