A Family Tradition

Casey Matthews (eDuck file)

When Oregon and USC face off this weekend at Autzen Stadium, there will be one family that may have to custom design their outfits, half with the Oregon colors of yellow and green and the other half with cardinal and gold for USC.

Casey Matthews gets his first chance to play in a college game against USC, his childhood favorite. Now of course Casey is a Duck, unlike his brother Clay, a linebacker for the Trojans or his uncle, Bruce who was a Trojan in the early 80s and his father Clay, a Trojan standout in the mid-1970s. Casey's older brother Kyle played for USC in 2000-03. Growing up a USC fan is very understandable.

"I've been watching SC my whole life and followed them," Matthews said of USC.

With all that influence on him, it was surprising to many that Casey wanted to head north to Oregon. However, since arriving at Oregon, Casey has made a contribution to the Ducks right off the bat. Casey Matthews is one of 10 true freshmen that have seen playing time this year for the Ducks. Matthews has been on the field with special teams and as the back up middle linebacker. So far he's accounted for seven tackles (three solos) in seven games.

Brother Clay Matthews has also appeared in seven games this year and has a total of 12 tackles (seven solos) including a tackle for loss, plus a break up, a quarterback hurry and blocked two kicks. Casey doesn't know if there is any chance that he and Clay will be on the field at the same time, but if it happens, Casey thinks it "would be fun."

That of course leads to a dilemma for Clay and Leslie Matthews (Casey and Clay's parents) regarding what they wear to the game on Saturday. Casey isn't sure but thinks he might know.

"I think they'll wear neutral colors, Matthews said with a grin as to what his parents will be wearing. "They'll have shirts with both (sets of colors)."

The No. 5 ranked Oregon Ducks (6-1, 3-1) are a 3-point favorite over the the 9th ranked Trojans. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 12 noon and the game will be carried live on FSN.
