Smith ended up the day by rushing for 124 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Smith carried the ball 35 times with the longest run of the day for 13 yards.

Head Coach Mike Bellotti thought his team had learned something from having play from behind.

"I hope we learned something from that," said Bellotti. "I don't want to be in that position very often. but if put in that position we know we can win."

Mitchell ended the game with nine tackles, four solo tackles and five assists. Mitchell also had a sack and a pass deflection.

"I felt pretty low, everybody was doing their job and I messed up," said Fife.

Fife dug deep into his courage and came back in the final two minutes of the game to direct the winning drive for Oregon that included two crucial passes.

Gipson, making his second start recorded three tackles, all solo tackles. Gipson also was given credit for a quarterback hurry. The Duck defense dug in it's heels during the fourth quarter of the game and not allow any FSU scoring in the final 15 minutes of play.

The loss dropped Fresno State's record to 1-2 while Oreogn improved to 2-0. The Ducks face the Idaho Vandals next week at Autzen Stadium.

Davis finished the afternoon with 118 yards on 20 carries. Olshansky had three assisted tackles.

The Oregon defense drew praise from their head coach and next week against Idaho the Duck defenders will have a chance at Harrington. Michael Harrington, is former Oregon quarterback Joey Harrington's brother.
