Houston preparing for big camps

Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra linebacker John Houston discusses his summer plans and narrowing down his favorites in the near future.

Five-star Serra linebacker John Houston has always strived to be number one. The 6-foot-3, 218-pound prospect is one of the top three outside linebackers in the country according to Scout.com, but he'll get his shot to prove why he could be on top at the upcoming Rivals Five-Star Challenge this weekend in Baltimore (Md.), and The Opening on the Nike campus in Oregon next month. "I'm always ready to compete with the best of the best," Houston said. "When I went out to the Rivals Five-Star Challenge last year with the 2014 class I competed real well with them. I just can't wait to do it again with my class."

Houston is also looking ahead to an important summer visit later this month.

"I'm going to Notre Dame on the 27th to look at the school for an unofficial visit," Houston said.

Outside of the visit to South Bend, Houston has a light summer planned. Of course, it won't be too long until its time to plan out official visits for the fall.

Claiming 25-plus offers from the likes of Alabama, USC, UCLA, Oregon, Oklahoma, Florida State, Miami and the Irish, Houston will have no shortage of suitors clamoring for one of his five official visit spots.

As he had hinted in February, one of them will be Oregon. The Ducks have been keeping tabs on Houston dating back to when defensive coordinator Don Pellum, then the Ducks linebackers coach, took notice of him during his sophomore year. As they've continue to build a player/coach relationship, Houston said the Ducks are remaining a factor in his recruitment.

"I talk to him every time he comes down here," Houston said. "I've been seeing him since my sophomore year. I talked to him about a week ago and we were talking about the program and visiting and everything like that. Our relationship is pretty much solid."

Right now, USC and UCLA are staying in contact with Houston more frequently than any other school, which doesn't come as much of a shock given his proximity to both programs.

"They have more of a chance where I can see them," Houston said. "They can tell me when they'll be down here and I'll show up where I can go the school and talk to someone real quick." Houston has yet to name any favorites, but he did hint as to when he'll release a list if no other big offers arrive.

"I will probably make a cut to my Top 14 schools in around a month or three weeks," Houston said.
