Goodson detained for drugs, weapons charges

Running back Mike Goodson

After inking a three-year deal this offseason to compete for the Jets' starting tailback job, it appears Mike Goodson's latest trouble with the law could spell the end of his time with Gang Green.

On Friday morning New York Jets running back Mike Goodson was arrested on drug possession and weapons charges, this according to the New Jersey state police. The Jets' prized free agent signing was reportedly parked in a GMC Yukon SUV in the left center lane of the Interstate 80 outside of Denville, N.J. Goodson was highly-intoxicated and police discovered that he was carrying a small amount of marijuana and a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun loaded with hollow point bullets.

A tow truck driver initially found Goodson and the driver of the vehicle, 31-year-old Garrant Evans of New Jersey, and phone police after he expressed concern over the physical condition of Goodson.

The 25-year-old running back was transported to St. Claire's hospital, and eventually brought into police custody. Goodson was charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams, possession of paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a loaded handgun and possession of hollow-point bullets.

At Morris County Correctional Facility he is being held on $50,000 bail. Meanwhile Evans, the driver of the vehicle, faces the identical charges as Goodson in addition to DWI, traffic summonses and possession of a weapon with a prior felony conviction. He is being held on $150,000 bail.

Goodson was signed by the Jets during the early free agency period agreeing to a three-year, $6.9 million deal including a $1 million dollar signing bonus. While his future with the Jets is in serious doubt, general manager John Idzik will have to decide whether to part ways with one of the team's top free agent acquisitions.

Goodson's latest run-in with the law wasn't the first legal issue the Jets have faced this offseason. In April, defensive end Claude Davis and cornerback Cliff Harris were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana in Morristown, N.J; merely days after signing a reserve/future contract with New York. The Jets cut both Davis and Harris after the incident.
