Baseball: Ducks Sweep Buckeyes

Posted May 12, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Jake Reed held Ohio State scoreless allowing just three runs in seven innings to lead No. 6 Oregon to a 1-0 win and a series sweep on Sunday at Bill Davis Stadium.

Reed walked the first two hitters of the game and faced a first and third situation with one out, but he picked off Kirby Pellent trying to steal second and Joe Ciamacco was thrown out at home on the same play to end the inning.

Reed (6-3) gave up just three hits and one walk over the next six innings. Jimmie Sherfy picked up his 18th save with a three-up, three-down ninth inning that included a strikeout. Christian Jones pitched a scoreless eighth for the Ducks (40-11), who held the Buckeyes (33-18) to just one run in 30 innings in the series.

Oregon scored its run on a wild pitch by Ohio State starter Jaron Long in the fourth. Scott Heineman and Mitchell Tolman reached base with back-to-back one-out hits, with both advancing on consecutive wild pitches allowing Heineman to score.

Reed and the rest of the pitching staff made the run hold up. Oregon held Ohio State to a .200 batting average in the series, while compiling a 0.31 ERA.

The Ducks return home for a five-game homestand this week. Oregon hosts Gonzaga in two non-conference games on Tuesday and Wednesday before hosting Oregon State in a three-game weekend series.
