LOS ANGELES – This time Oregon couldn’t come from behind to beat USC. After back-to-back come from behind wins over the Trojans, the Ducks fell behind by four runs after five innings and couldn’t complete the comeback losing 5-3 at Dedeaux Field on Sunday.

USC took a 1-0 led in the first without the benefit of a hit. Cole Irvin walked Greg Zebrack to lead off the game, and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a fly ball to right field and scored on a wild pitch.

The Trojans added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Jake Hernandez delivered a bases-clearing three-RBI double to left center after two hits and a walk loaded the bases.

Mitchell Tolman pulled the Ducks within three in the top of the fifth when he hit his first career home run off the right field foul pole.

USC got the run back in the fifth. After two hits and put runners on the corners, James Roberts drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Oregon (15-6, 2-1 Pac-12) cut the lead to two with two runs in the eighth. J.J. Altobelli drove in Conner Hofmann, who led off the inning with an infield single, with a double to the left field corner. Altobelli scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Payne to cut the lead to 5-3.

Packard finished with two of Oregon’s five hits. Irvin (3-1) took the loss allowing five runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Kyle Twomey (2-1) got the win for USC (8-11, 1-2 Pac-12) allowing just two earned runs on five hits in eight innings.
