Ducks Improve To 2-0 In Pac-12

LOS ANGELES – Oregon scored six runs in the eighth inning to rally for an 8-4 Pac-12 Conference win over USC on Saturday night at Dedeaux Field.

LOS ANGELES – Oregon scored six runs in the eighth inning to rally for an 8-4 Pac-12 Conference win over USC on Saturday night at Dedeaux Field.

Scott Heineman led the Ducks (15-5, 2-0 Pac-12) going 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored. Mitchell Tolman, making just his third career start, went 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored, while J.J. Altobelli was 2-for-5.

Darrell Hunter picked up his first career win in relief of Tommy Thorpe. Hunter gave up two hits but no runs in 1.1 innings.

The Ducks got on the board in the fifth win an unearned run after stranding six runners on base in the first four innings. Ryon Healy picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Heineman, who reached on a throwing error to open the inning by shortstop Blake Lacey.

Oregon (15-5, 2-0 Pac-12) added another unearned run in the sixth. Tolman led off the inning with a double into the right field corner, and advanced to third on a ground out by Sean Chase. Tolman advanced to third when Lacey dropped the ball on a return throw from first. Connor Hofmann picked up Tolman with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead.

USC (7-11, 0-2 Pac-12) took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth behind five hits and a walk. Bobby Stahel led off the inning with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Adam Landecker. After a walk, the Trojans put together four straight hits scoring three runs to chase Oregon starter Thorpe with the Trojans leading 4-2.

The Ducks responded with a six-run eighth inning that Brett Thomas started with a walk. After Thomas moved to second on a ground ball out by Tyler Baumgartner, Tolman scored him with a RBI single to centerfield to cut the USC lead to one.

Pinch hitter Steven Packard added a single moving pinch runner Desmond Santos to third. With Packard on second and Santos on third, pinch hitter Ryan Hambright picked up a RBI with a chopper to short that Lacey couldn’t field cleanly allowing Hambright to reach and Santos to score.

J.J. Altobelli reached on an error to load the bases for Heineman who doubled off the right field wall scoring Packard and Hambright to give the Ducks a 6-4 lead.

Aaron Payne added a sacrifice fly and Ryon Healy picked up a RBI with a single to give Oregon an 8-4 lead.

Oregon will look to sweep the three-game series when the Ducks face USC at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
