Hooper Says He's Still Considering Five

Concord (Calif.) DE/TE Austin Hooper

A talented two-way player, Concord (Calif.) DE/TE Austin Hooper is one of the top players out west that still hasn't decided on a school. But, while highly coveted by several schools, Hooper still has some visits to take before he makes a decision.

Austin Hooper has had quite the month. A state championship with De La Salle was followed with an invite to the Semper Fi All-American Game. Now, with a few of weeks left until signing day, Hooper has to decide who will get to take advantage of his dynamic skill set for the next four years.

"It's been fun," Hooper said. "It's a neat experience to play in that bowl game and win a state title."

Cal, Stanford, Washington and Oregon are still in the running with Hooper, as well as Oregon State. He's being scouted on both ends of the ball as a defensive end and tight end. Despite reports of having a couple of favorites, Hooper said he's still weighing his options with all of these schools.

"I wouldn't put one over another," Hooper said. "I like all the schools, I'm taking trips to all of them and then once I see all of them I'll rank them out in order."

Hooper has been trying to set up a trip to Oregon for weeks, but obstacles keep getting in the way. First was football, then dead period, and the latest delay came from the Oregon program itself.

"I was trying to set it up for this weekend but with the Coach Kelly situation they weren't sure if he was staying or leaving so we postponed it until we were sure about what he was going to end up doing," Hooper said. "I'll definitely be out there in the next couple of weeks, but I talked to Coach Aliotti on Sunday and he said ‘Yeah, don't go up.'"

Despite a coaching change at Cal and a near change at Oregon, Hooper said his decision will not hinge on who is coaching where.

"It's interesting to see them move around, but it doesn't affect (my decision) that much," Hooper said. "Coaches come and go at every school so you can't really bank on going somewhere just for the coaches."

Still, Hooper is in no rush to make his decision. He said that he wants to schedule and take all of his visits before sitting down and weighing his options. In addition to his pending Oregon trip, he's trying to visit Oregon State if time permits.

"I haven't been to Oregon, I haven't been to Oregon State, I haven't been to Cal since summer time so I haven't seen the new facilities up there or anything like that," Hooper said. "To be honest I haven't even met Coach Dykes so there's still a lot of stuff I have to work out first before ordering it out."
