James breaks down Oregon offer

Brookfield (Wis.) DE Alec James

In the past week, Oregon has set their sights on a number of linemen on both sides of the ball in an attempt to beef up their recruiting class. One of those players, Wisconsin verbal commit Alec James, broke down his offer from the Ducks on Wednesday.

The Brookfield (Wis.) defensive lineman said that he was offered by Ducks defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro. The two met up last week in Wisconsin at East High School, where James attends to talk football.

The 6-4, 220-pound senior said that Azzinaro spent most of the time getting to know James personally and discussing how he would fit into Oregon's system.

"We talked a lot about Oregon and what they do different than a lot of universities," James said. "The way that he explained it to me, it sounds like a really good system and I think I could fit into it well."

After his meeting with Azzinaro, James said he was a bit shocked by the offer coming so close to recruiting dead period.

"It was surprising because I thought they were going to call me on Friday or Saturday," James said. "They wanted me to call them (Tuesday) so I called them and they offered me."

A plan is currently in the works for James to visit. Of course, contact is limited at this point between the two sides due to the mandated dead period, so nothing is finalized yet.

"I'm not sure when yet but there going to let me know and it's going to be sometime in January," he said.

The Ducks didn't start aggressively pursuing James until recently, but James said that he has been following Oregon for some time.

"I've liked them for a while and they were on my radar," James said. "They just started talking to me after the whole situation with (Badgers head coach Bret Bielema) leaving."

Though still committed to Wisconsin and not ready to change that yet, James is keeping his options open as the recruiting process begins again. He's feeling no pressure as he prepares to take more visits over the next month.

"It's a good feeling to know that either way I'm playing football somewhere next year," he said.
