USC to play in the Hyundai Sun Bowl against Georgia Tech on New Year's Eve in El Paso, Texas.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- USC is headed for El Paso, Texas to play in the Hyundai Sun Bowl against Georgia Tech on New Year's Eve.

This is the first bowl game the Trojans are eligible to participate in since their two-year NCAA post-season ban.

"After not being in a bowl the past two years, we look forward to playing in a bowl with the tradition of the Sun Bowl," said USC head coach Lane Kiffin in a statement.

Georgia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference finished its season 6-7, dropping its regular season finale to No. 13 Florida State.

"Georgia Tech is a very well-coached team," Kiffin said, "and will present a challenge on both sides of the ball, especially with their great ability to run the ball."

This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 1973. USC has made two previous trips to the Sun Bowl, in 1990 when they lost to Michigan State and again in 1998, when they lost to TCU.

The Trojans are coming off a disappointing 7-5 season after being voted the country's top preseason team.

"Although our season didn't go as well as we hoped," Kiffin said, "we appreciate the opportunity we now have to play another game and attempt to go out on a winning note."
