Prospect Preview: Week Twelve

Devon Allen

The playoffs heat up this weekend and there are some marquee matchups, including a game in Arizona featuring a ton of UCLA targets...

Game of the Week: Phoenix (Ariz.) Mountain Pointe vs. Phoenix (Ariz.) Brophy Prep
This game is loaded with UCLA prospects and also includes a Bruin verbal and one of UCLA's top targets.  Mountain Pointe's top prospect is UCLA commit Kenny Lacy, an offensive lineman, and he's joined by 2014 prospect Natrell Curtis, who will visit UCLA unofficially this weekend, as well as do-everything two-way player Jalen Browne, another 2014 prospect.  Brophy features Devon Allen, who will also visit UCLA unofficially this weekend, a four-star receiver who's a heavy lean to the Bruins.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Crenshaw vs. Los Angeles (Calif.) Dorsey
The Cougars and Dons meet with much higher stakes, this time a trip to the City Section semifinals, in a game matching up two of the biggest rivals in Los Angeles.  Crenshaw is trying to keep their outside chances at the state bowl game alive.  Led by UCLA commit Mossi Johnson and Utah verbal Dominique Hatfield (who UCLA has offered), the Cougars face a Dorsey squad they trounced earlier in the season. The Dons are led by cornerback Daquawn Brown, who will be at the Rose Bowl tomorrow, and UCLA offered in the spring, as well as Jayme Otomewo, Delvon Hardaway and Billy Vaughn among others.

Long Beach (Calif.) Poly vs. Mission Viejo (Calif.)
Two traditional powers meet in the quarterfinals of the Pac-5.  Poly is led by linebacker Jayon Brown, a UCLA commit, could end up at safety in college and anchors the Jackrabbit defense. Safety David Price is back from injuries and has offers from Arizona, Colorado and SMU and sophomore corner Iman Marshall is one of the best 10th graders in the entire west region.  They meet a Diablos team that has Erik Bunte, one of UCLA's earliest commits, and four-star safety Max Redfield, who recently decommitted from USC.

Redlands (Calif.) at Upland (Calif.)
UCLA commit Craig Lee is back and the Terriers will need him against a talented Highlander squad, featuring UCLA target Joe Mathis on the defensive line, and 2014 receiver Jeffrey Farrar.

Bellevue (Wash.) vs. Gig Harbor (Wash.) Peninsula
Bellevue is cruising towards its fifth straight state title, and really hasn't been tested this year, but Peninsula will do what they can to stay with the Wolverines.  Bellevue's top prospect is UCLA verbal Myles Jack, who stars at linebacker and running back, and may be the best overall player in the state.  Bellevue also has 2014 athlete Budda Baker, whom the Bruins have offered.

Peoria (Ariz.) Centennial vs. Tucson (Ariz.) Salpointe Catholic
Centennial boasts Jalen Ortiz, a UCLA verbal, and he'll lead Centennial into the quarterfinals against Salpointe Catholic, which has 2014 receiver prospect Cameron Denson, whom the Bruins have already offered.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Salesian vs. Bishop (Calif.)
UCLA commit Jermaine Kelly and targets in 2014 Marquis Ware, Jamardre Cobb and Rodney Carr, lead a loaded Salesian team that is geared for a big run in the CIF-SS Northeast Division playoffs in the quarterfinals.

Fresno (Calif.) Central vs. Bakersfield (Calif.)
The Tigers are hoping to continue their playoff run against Bakersfield.  Fresno Central is led by UCLA cornerback prospect Johnny Johnson and the West's top prospect in 2014, receiver Michiah Quick, who UCLA has also offered.

Other UCLA Commits and Prospects in Action
Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde and UCLA verbal Poasi Moala take on Wildomar (Calif.) Elsinore in quarterfinal playoff action.  Rialto (Calif.) Carter and UCLA verbal Kenneth Clark face Ridgecrest (Calif.) La Sierra in the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Eastern Division playoffs. Encinitas (Calif.) La Costa Canyon and UCLA commit Scott Quessenberry play El Cajon (Calif.) Valhalla in the quarterfinals.  West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade and UCLA recruit, running back Terrell Newby will visit Morro Bay (Calif.).

Thursday Night Results
Missouri City (Texas) Marshall linebacker Deon Hollins won 56-12 in their first round playoff game against Houston (Texas) Sharpstown.
