THE COUGARS will apparently add some depth to their backcourt after Oregon freshman guard Brett Kingma announced that he’ll transfer to Washington State this month.

Brett Kingma, a 6-foot-1 guard who starred at Jackson High School of Mills Creek, left Oregon following spring quarter. Kingma announced his decision Tuesday via twitter, writing “Excited to go to Washington State and continue my journey in Pullman.”

Kingma did not immediately return messages seeking comment. Washington State was also unable to comment or confirm the move, as the Cougars’ men’s basketball team is currently on an 11-day trip in Australia.

It is unknown whether Kingma was offered a scholarship. As a high school senior, Kingma had Pac-12 offers from Oregon, Washington and Arizona State.

Following standard transfer protocol, Kingma would likely sit out the 2012-13 season, and have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2013-14.

During his freshman season in Eugene, Kingma played in 19 games, averaging 3.1 points a game. Kingma’s stock was hot at the season’s outset, as he played in the Ducks’ first 14 games. But his playing time dramatically tailed off from there, as Kingma played only 38 minutes in Oregon’s final 20 games of the season.

Kingma asked for his scholarship release from Oregon in June. He told CBSsports.com that “I need a new system where I can reach my full potential. I had a great experience at Oregon. I don’t regret anything. I got better. I made lifelong friends. I have a lot of respect for coach (Dana) Altman.”
