Notes From Spring Practice: Day 10
Oregon QB Bryan Bennett
Posted Apr 18, 2011
After practice Monday morning, Oregon head coach Chip Kelly responded to the news of walk-on quarterback Dustin Haines' indefinite suspension.
The big story coming out of Monday morning's practice inside the Moshofsky Center was the news that sophomore walk-on quarterback
has been indefinitely suspended from team activities following his arrest over the weekend for excessive noise, interfering with a police officer and resisting arrest. After practice, Kelly addressed the media's questions surrounding Haines' arrest and his subsequent suspension.
"He's suspended until we figure out what's going on," Kelly stated Monday. "I have a system (for suspending players), but I'm not gonna discuss it."
When asked how Haines' absence would affect the practice routine for the other quarterbacks on the roster, Kelly said there would be no change in the number of snaps allotted to
. Kelly also stated that Haines' suspension would have no impact on the limited amount of reps that sophomore
already receives at the position.
Practice itself was rather sharp, as both Thomas and Bennett had marked success throwing the ball against what has been a hot Duck defense this spring. Aside from a marvelous bobbling interception from junior defensive end
and a nice read and break on a pick by redshirt freshman cornerback
, the quarterbacks were able to find receivers such as
for big plays. Murphy was particularly impressive this morning, coming up with a number of difficult catches throughout the day.
Kelly has also been pleased with the progress of the aforementioned Hill, who was a late addition to the team last season after encountering some difficulty getting cleared academically by the NCAA.
"Troy's had a good spring," exclaimed Kelly. "He got here late and missed camp, but he was here all last fall with us and has a lot of skills. He's a smart player and he's really starting to come along as far as pushing for some time in the secondary. I'm excited about Troy."
The hit of the day came courtesy of senior cornerback
who blasted junior running back
on a screen pass during redzone drills. Though Barner took some time on the turf to collect himself after the hit, he got up under his own power and walked woozily to join the team after practice was whistled over.
