Notes From Spring Practice: Day 4

Oregon linebacker Michael Clay

The Oregon offense may have worn the coveted black practice jerseys after their 102-92 victory during Saturday's competition day, but it was the Duck defense that played a starring role Monday morning.

With Saturday's first days of pads already in the books, the Ducks returned to the Moshofsky Center practice field Monday morning to start their second week of spring drills. Entering Monday, Oregon head coach Chip Kelly was eager to see just how his team would respond coming off their first day of full contact.

"They came back pretty good," Kelly said. "We're relatively healthy right now, so we've got a lot of guys running around and we were running at a pretty good clip today."

The one significant injury of note is the one to senior defensive end Terrell Turner. Turner was seen on crutches with a cast on his foot during Monday's practice. When asked if Turner would return to action this spring, Kelly simply stated, "I don't think so."

Despite the loss of Turner, the defense flexed it's muscle and held the offense in check for most of the day. Kelly mentioned that he was pleased with the defense's tempo and their knack for being around the ball on Monday. Sophomore Ricky Heimuli was his disruptive self once again from his defensive tackle position, while linebackers Boseko Lokombo and Michael Clay each had picks for the defense (Clay unofficially notched two). Redshirt freshman cornerback Terrance Mitchell was in the pilfering mood as well, intercepting quarterback Darron Thomas during one particular sequence during 11-on-11 team drills.

"Terrance Mitchell keeps showing up," Kelly said. "He showed up again today with his interception and he's starting to make some plays."

Spring drills resume Wednesday morning inside the Moshofsky Center at 8:35. Practices are open to the general public.
